Oryclolagus cuniculus is the scientific name for rabbits. Oryct stands for ‘digger’, lag means ‘hare’ (Greek). Cunniculus is Latin for burrowing. The etimology underscores rabbits’ kinship with hares.
Rabbits possess an extremely high reproductive capability. Female rabbits regain reproductivity immediately after giving birth.
Breeding of rabbits, just as with the breeding of other animals, requires commitment, patience, time and a number of skills and knowledge. If you have decided to develop a breed, you should follow a number of rules.
By this time, the world has accumulated scores of breeds of rabbits. We are going to take a look at only a few of them. European Orictolagus Cuniculus, which earlier was viewed as wild and now, through domestication and selective breeding, has produced a number of popular species, such as Dutch rabbit, Holland and English Lops, Netherland Dwarfs, Angora rabbit. American Sylvilagus comprises 13 species of Cottontail rabbits.
